Understanding Sustainable Farming

My Beginning: The Vision for Tipsy Goose Farm

When I started Tipsy Goose Farm, the vision was clear: to create a farm that not only produces high-quality apples from the orchard but also create a biodiverse sustainable farm. I want to demonstrate that farming can be both productive and environmentally friendly.

Setting Goals

Goals to guide this journey:

1. Reduce Chemical Inputs: Focus on organic farming methods.

2. Enhance Soil Fertility: Implementing companion planting, crop rotation and cover cropping.

3. Promote Local Food Systems: Connecting with local markets and consumers.

4. Educate the Community: Offering workshops and farm tours to share my knowledge.

   
   

The Challenges I Face

Every journey has its obstacles, and mine is no different. Starting a sustainable farm practice comes with its own set of challenges.

Initial Setbacks

• Financial Constraints: The investment for starting a farm from scratch on a single salary is significant. Slowly the farm will come to be as I can afford it.

• Learning Curve: I am not a farmer by birth, all of this is new to me. I am a big believer in learning by doing.

• Northern Climate: Figuring out which varieties of apples and companion plants will grow in my chilly Zone 2b requires a lot of research. And a little trial and error.

  
  

Overcoming Challenges

Despite these challenges, I remain committed to the vision. I have learned to seek advice from experienced local farmers, attend workshops, and research, research, research.
